Natalie Portman And Marvel Partner For STEM Program For Girls

Natalie Portman has partnered with Marvel to announce their Ultimate Mentor Adventure. It is a mentor contest which gives girls the chance to interview women who are well versed in the field of science, technology, math and engineering.

Eligible girls (they must be U.S. residents, in grades 9-12) must look for a woman who is working in a STEM field. The interview should cover their job experiences in the field. This opportunity will provide useful tips on interviewing and finding women in STEM fields within their area of interest. The girls are expected to make a video discussing their experience and their love for science. This experience is bound to be enriching for them as they discover more about STEM.

The incentive on winning the prize is a trip to Los Angeles to be a part of the screening of Thor: The Dark World on opening day where all the winning videos will be made into a documentary which will be screened before the film.

The best think about the contest is that Portman’s character, Jane Foster, in Thor was the inspiration. Playing astrophysicist wasn’t too easy for Natalie Portman. She speaks at length regarding her talents and the importance of science. Portman also spoke about the female characters in the Marvel Universe about the importance of feminism in the industry.

It is nice to see her team up with Marvel. Highlighting a female character who could have easily faded into the background. It is important that girls are motivated to explore science and it is imperative that the resources and incentive are adequate as well.

It’s great to see her team up with Marvel to highlight a female character who could merely just fade into the background, get girls motivated about exploring science and giving them the resources and incentive to do so.
