Jose Mourinho Talks About Mata And The Premier League Standings

Jose Mourinho proved his critics wrong by getting Chelsea at the top of the table on goal difference. This was first win in three Premier League games.

The 2-0 result against Fulham ended a run of four games without a victory in all competitions. Mourinho described the sequence as “very bad”. Seven points from four games is their worst tally at this stage of the season in 10 years. Goals by Oscar and Mikel in the second half helped Chelsea overtake all their rivals. However, the other teams have a game in hand.

“I believe that it is natural to lose a few games when you win some. I don’t believe that it is the end of the world”. After a poor start to the season, everybody commented that it is the worst start for about a decade. Now, I go to bed knowing that nobody is in front of us in the league table”, Mourinho said.

“I have been involved in football for quite a long time when the results are not in our favour. The results aren’t very good. No dramas about losing out on a few points. It happens. We need to move on. I don’t expect people to speak very good about team at a time when we aren’t performing well. But, I am building a different team here at Chelsea. The philosophy and the style of play needs to be tweaked a little bit as well”, he said.

Mourinho has immense trust in Oscar and he has repaid the faith shown by scoring from close range against Fulham. The benching of Juan Mata continued as the Spanish midfielder didn’t even make the 18 man squad.

Mourinho said that Mata would be a part of the Capital One Cup squad at Swindon and threw an open challenge to Mata to prove him wrong. “I hope he tells me on the pitch that you are wrong. He should show that he is the best and is hungry to play every game”, Mourinho said.

“I gave Mata sufficient time to stay in contention by giving him some time on the pitch. I started him against Everton and gave him 30-35 minutes against Basel as well. I want a professional reaction from him. I would definitely start Mata if I feel he can gel with the team tactics and strategy”, he added.
