Apple Files For ‘iWatch’ As Its Patent For Wearable Computers

Interest in the development of Wearable Computers has increased recently. So much so, that every tech giant is eyeing the market. While Samsung has indicated that it has been long working on a Smart Watch, Google has been busy developing a SmartWatch that runs Android. Microsoft is reportedly still building upon the idea.

Their arch rival Apple is rumored to have partnered with INTEL to develop an iOS based wrist watch, that would be Bluetooth enabled and sport a 1.5-inch OLED screen.

Perhaps, taking a cue from the Apple’s ‘iProduct’ naming convention, the rumor world adopted the name ‘iWatch’ for this kind of handheld computer or watch device, when reports emerged that the company was working on a SmartWatch. Apple has gone a step further by filing earlier this month with the Japan Patent Office to protect the name for this revolutionary product. According to Bloomberg, the filing was made public only last week. Employees from Apple’s marketing, software, and hardware units who had previously worked on the iPhone and iPad, are a part of the team of more than a 100.

Though the concept of the tech giants working and developing on this product seems promising, the idea is not exactly an invention. The concept of SmartWatches, fitness bands, or a combination of the two was talked about earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show. Some of them include the much-awaited Pebble wristwatch and the 007-inspired Martian Passport Watch.
