The Emirates Stadium was shouting out Wenger’s name in the closing stages. It almost seems absurd that some of them were questioning the capability of the manager a few weeks ago. One should not draw conclusions about the prospects of Arsenal, but the signs that they would be in strong contention for the major prizes is no question.
This particular performance against Napoli had all the hallmarks of a great Wenger team. The passing was accurate. The Gunners had around 63% of the possession.
Arsenal have always been accused of being staid on the ball and failing to convert possession into goal-scoring chances. Mesut Ozil’s arrival to the team has made a dramatic change to the team. Every time he touched the ball, it signaled intent. He seems like he moves around the pitch in a very casual manner. But, when the ball arrives at his feet, he injects purpose to the Arsenal team.
Ozil shone at the big stage. At Madrid, he had to share stardom with the likes of Ronaldo and many others. In Arsenal, he is the undisputed star and seemed to enjoy the limelight. The opening goal was Ozil’s first in Arsenal colours. Ozil had complete faith in his technique. His goal was a moment of attacking brillinace. Within the first 15 minutes, Arsenal were 2-0 in fron.
Arsenal fans have always been dreaming of acquiring a player of Ozil’s elite caliber. They would be soaking in delight on seeing him play in Arsenal colours. If Ozil and the team continue their sparkling form, the dreams of silverware would no longer remain a dream, but would become a reality.
