To challenge Four Square, Twitter has a new kid in its team : Spindle, a location-based social discovery engine, Twitter has recently acquired Spindle. The terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.
It should be noted that Twitter has cracked a few acquisitions in recent months like Lucky Sort, Ubalu and Bluefin Labs. The Deal was confirmed by a Twitter in a tweet shortly afterward:
“Spindle’s service will shut down as part of the acquisition and the team will relocate to Twitter’s office in San Francisco.”
Spindle which describes itself as a “news feed for your neighbourhood”, was founded two and a half years ago by former Microsoft engineers with the goal of helping users discover relevant content on social networks based on time and place. It collates Twitter and Facebook posts from local businesses into a stream of local events and Groupon-like offers. It managed ti raise $2.3 million in funding in late 2012.
“Every time we’ve experimented and looked beyond local discovery, we’ve been amazed by the breadth and quality of content shared on Twitter,” Spindle said in a blog post. “By joining forces with Twitter, we can do so much more to help you find interesting, timely, and useful information about what’s happening around you.”
The Spindle team is keen on relocation which is reflected in their statement :
“We’ve spent the past two and a half years building a product that helps you answer the question: “What’s happening nearby right now?” Every time we’ve experimented and looked beyond local discovery, we’ve been amazed by the breadth and quality of content shared on Twitter,” Spindle said.
