David Twohy’s Riddick, starring Vin Diesel, made a shocking $7.3 Million on Friday. The movie was the only release this weekend. Some may say that it had an easy escalade to its first position on the Box Office List and some might also contradict this. But what is interesting is that the movie did not have any new necessarily interesting debut.
The movie is a fourth in-line Sci-Fi in continuation of The Chronicles Of Riddick film series. In this installment, Diesel is left for dead on a sun-scorched planet, and finds himself up against an alien race of predators. Activating an emergency beacon alerts two ships: one carrying a new breed of mercenary, the other captained by a man from Riddick’s past. Riddick was met with mostly mixed reviews, with many citing it as an improvement over The Chronicles of Riddick. It currently holds 59% approval rating on the aggregate review site Rotten Tomatoes, based on 114 reviews. Its consensus states: “It may not win the franchise many new converts, but this back-to-basics outing brings Riddick fans more of the brooding sci-fi action they’ve come to expect.” Another review aggregation website Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 top reviews from mainstream critics, calculated a score of 46 out of 100 based on 26 reviews.
It is predicted that depending on the track on which the movie is on for now, it shall end up making around $18 to $19 Million by the end of this weekend. However, There are some who put the estimate beyond a $20 Million margin. But this is, of course, just a speculation. And even if this were to come true, sequel to the series is still a whopping $5 Million behind The Chronicles Of Riddick which recorded a $25 Million opening.
