The Obama administration has released 2 documents to show the scope of the NSA’s data collection program that would be slightly more transparent and/or spew numbers that would confuse the common public.
The documents released disclose the fact that NSA is claimed to monitoring 1.6% of the worlds Internet Traffic and reviews 0.00004% of all traffic. This would surely make one think that ‘Yes, that’s a pretty small percentage’ and that is what government wants people to think.
The Internet carries 1,826 Petabytes of information per day of information per day and NSA touches about 1.6% of this memory in its foreign intelligence mission. Although of the 1.6% of the data only 0.025% is actually selected for review.
The overall effect reflects that NSA analysts look at 0.00004% of the world’s traffic in performing their mission which is less than one part in a million. If thought in a other way around a standard basketball court that is represented the global communications environment, the total collection of NSA would be represented by an area which would be smaller than a dime on that basketball court.
Less than a dime of Basketball court, really? Anyway all together the documents do show as to how that program has helped stop a terrorist attacks in 2009 (a New York subway bomb) but it’s very obvious on their part, that the NSA is using the percentage to make their actual number look less.
Whatever are the figures revealed the fact is that there is still a TON of traffic being monitored by NSA given the hugeness of the Internet.
