New Google Glass Apps Revealed At SXSW 2013

At the South by Southwest (SXSW) held last month, Google got the opportunity to share more about Google Glass and Google Glass Apps. Details about Glass’ Mirror application programming interface were given, and applications that are already being developed for Glass were displayed, including Path and Gmail. Google Developers posted a video just yesterday, so that people have a better understanding of what Google Glass really is:

Google’s Senior Developer Advocate, Timothy Jordan said that, “It feels like tech is often getting in the way more than it needs to. That’s what we’re addressing with Project Glass.” The apps have been designed simply and specifically to be used with the glasses. The Google Glass Apps will consist of ‘Timeline Cards’, which are the initial cards needed to go through the rest of the app.

The apps have been created based on four guidelines:

They’re designed for Glass: It’ll be easier to get news, in a faster and more convenient way, and get information based on your interests. You won’t have to go through all the news, just the headlines.

They won’t be inconvenient: These apps have been designed to make things easier for people. Jordan said that, for example, an app that has too many notifications would not be compatible with Glass. “If someone misses a notification, that should be okay,” said Jordan.

It’s for the present, the real world: The apps should give the user news about the present, things that are happening right now. Therefore news that just came in would be displayed, but a news story from several days back would not.

They will match your expectations: The app developers will give you what you expect, not something that is unexpected, complicated and unpleasant.

“Glass is something that doesn’t compete with, but blends into, your life,” said Jordan.
