Goals from Stevan Jovetic and substitute Samir Nasri eased Manchester City into the FA Cup quarterfinals with a 2-0 win over Chelsea.
Mourinho’s men gave a dominant performance during the first 10 minutes of the clock, but Jovetic put City in lead after 16 minutes after his brilliant finish. The goal was followed by his attempt to make a rebound which had clipped the bar. The score board read City leading with a 1-0 goal but soon through the midway of the second half, Nasri played David Silva through and, while it looked as though Silva had strayed offside, he quickly switched possession back inside to the onrushing Nasri, who tucked the ball into an open goal.
City was given another opportunity to net the ball in but this time it was ruled out for offside against Joleon Lescott. However, it did not affect them and were out of threat. They face Sunderland in the League Cup final on March 2, and have reached the FA Cup final in two of the previous three seasons.
Wigan managed to keep their FA cup fream alive with a 2-1 wint at Cardiff City. Midfielder Chris McCann started off with brilliant score which was counter attacked by the Bluebirds’ striker Fraizer Campbell with a low drive. Ben Watson, scorer of the winner in last season’s final win over Manchester City, hit the first-half winner with a superb strike from 30 yards.
Southampton managed to defend Sunderland’s Craig Gardner’s stunning goal which resulted in 1-0 defeat.
Gardner’s 49th-minute strike settled in a fifth-round tie with Southampton striker Rickie Lambert guilty of a miss in the closing stages. The all-Championship clash between Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton Athletic had to be postponed as a result of a waterlogged pitch at Hillsborough.
