How It Works – Google Answers Your Questions!

“ THE STORY OF SEND ” released by Google last year has lead to the release of “ HOW IT WORKS ”. Story Of Send was Google’s way of explaining how it dealt with mails. ” HOW IT WORKS ” released this Friday, as the name suggests is Google’s way of explaining it’s functionality.

“We were looking at this site [The Story Of Send], Matt Cutts [Google’s chief web spam fighter] and I and others on the

team and thinking, ‘Why isn’t there anything like this about search in a similar format?” said Google Product Manager – Jake Hubert.

Hubert also added that previously Google had a couple of resources on this topic but they weren’t really something that a layman would understand. This site is specially designed for users who are really and genuinely interested in knowing Google’s working. Though the basic aim behind the site is to help the publishers understand what should be done if Google isn’t happy with the site.

Google follows three basic steps in it’s process. These steps includes:

CRAWLING AND INDEXING- Crawling is how Google finds web pages and make them searchable for users. This is equivalent to a big virtual book called ‘index’. The site shows that search starts with web and it’s made up of over 30 trillion individual pages and it is still growing.

RANKING PAGES WITH ALGORITHMS- Under this category we see that Google writes codes and algorithms to get the best results possible. Most clues are derived from what the user is searching for.

SPAM FIGHTING- The last and the final stage of this process is how Google fights spam. An interesting feature here is Google’s ability to deal with live spams. There is a live slide show which showcases spams removed almost as early as one hour.

For those interested in search, Google has released a 43 page document which shows Google’s Search result.

Google is hopeful that it will provide an answer to all those enthusiasts who wanted to know how Google Search works. It also answer questions on how pages are found across the web and how it decides list them in response to a search?
