Hayao Miyazaki Announces His Retirement

Hayao Miyazaki, the famous Japanese feature-length animations director and also a manga artist is retiring after 50 years of being a part of the Japanese entertainment industry. The head of his production company released the news to us. In fact, Hayao Miyazaki has been compared to Walt Disney at one point of time.

“Miyazaki has confirmed that ‘Kaze Tachinu’ would be his last film and will now retie. Head of Studio Ghibli, ‘Koji Hoshino’ was co-founded by Miyazaki. His retirement plans was confirmed to us at the Venice film festival. The film titled, “The Wind Rises”, narrates the story of a fighter plane designer during World War 2. He went on to design a fighter aircraft- Mitsubishi long-range A6M. It is one of the 20 movies which is competing for the Golden Lion award at the festival in Lido island. The film has been appreciated in Japan, but got mixed reaction at the Venice festival.

Further details weren’t provided by Hoshino, saying that only Miyazaki would hold a press. The director’s absence in the film festival seemed conspicuous. The 72 year old Miyazaki has won the heart of critics and the audiences around the world. His career started in the 1960’s starting off a series of Japanese cartoons, now called Anime.

Miyazaki’s famous works include ‘Princess Mononoke’ and ‘Spirited Away’ helped him make the jump from small time cartoonist to a popular career in Japan to a broader audience. His career began in 1963, while working on the anime, “The castle of Cagliostro”, which had the famous thief, Arsene Lupin. He was found by Monkey Punch, the manga artist.

This is Miyazaki’s first film, wherein the protagonist is a real historical figure. In fact, Horikoshi’s life inspired Miyazaki. The animation has historical details added to it, and it was done so in an attempt to show that mangas and animes are not just for the young audience, but for adults as well.
