Google recently gained approval from FCC to operate a database that will enable Google to use unlicensed TV broadcast spectrum for wireless broadband and shared among many users. The decision as made by FCC last friday, which makes Google to be the latest company to complete the FCC’s 45-day testing phase. Spectrum Bridge and Telcordia ae over their trials, and there are another 10 companies, including Microsoft, which have plans in pipeline for similar databases. The new database will keep track on TV broadcast frequencies allowing full usage of available wireless broadband space on the spectrum, also referred as “white space.”
Plans have been in pipelines from FCC’s end to free up spectrum for wireless carriers, which include complains on lack of adequate available spectrum to meet market demand.
However, this is slight bad for TV broadcasters as allowing others to use white space, which is their territory, could cause interference.
