Google recently changed their Contacts API terms of service to block services from importing Google Contacts that don’t allow the same open API for exporting contacts. Facebook was the biggest app that came under that criteria which in turn led blocking Facebook from Google’s Contacts API.
After what Facebook did as backfire to this block tells me that Facebook never gives up. Instead of removing Gmail from their “Find Your Friends” page, Facebook now tries to authenticate with Google and taunts Google by giving user the message: “Google did not return any of your contacts. You can still find your friends on Facebook by uploading a file of your Gmail contacts below”. Furthermore Facebook provided a work around to the block. It allows you to upload a CSV file of your Google Contacts, it even provides a hotlink to the CSV download file from Google. I have never in corporate warfare, seen a company say “up yours” to another company in such a clever fashion.
A Google spokesman later said on the matter:
We’re disappointed that Facebook didn’t invest their time in making it possible for their users to get their contacts out of Facebook. As passionate believers that people should be able to control the data they create, we will continue to allow our users to export their Google contacts.
