Facebook, the most popular social networking site with over 1 billion monthly active users across the world have banned a mother twice in the same row for posting pictures of breastfeeding to her own children. On the fairer part, Facebook have officially apologized to the mother and have marked the incident as error, but only after the intervention of FOX 40 News.
Kristy Kemp, a mother who runs a page on Facebook for Breastfeeding/MamaTalk was kicked out of Facebook when one of the followers added a breast feeding picture that clearly shows a baby breastfeeding. The picture was taken down by the Facebook authority, and Kemp was banned from Facebook for 1 day. Once the things were in place, another follower uploaded another picture of breastfeeding to her child, and this time Kemp was banned from Facebook for three days, and the picture was taken down. The mother tried to get in touch with the Facebook officials but all in vain until the news channel got in touch.
The nudity and pornographic policy of Facebook clearly states it does not allow posting or sharing pornographic content or any other kind of explicitly sexual content involving a minor. It also bears limitations about posting any content that displays nudity. But at the same time they also explains their respect for the personal choice of the users about sharing content of personal importance, like photographs of sculptures or pictures of breastfeeding to a child.
After the incident with Kemp, the question arises, about the stand of Facebook on the personal contents posted and shared on its pages. Does not it seem a bit too sceptical to ban a mother for long days for posting pictures of breastfeeding to her own child? Taking a strict stance against pornography and nudity in the social networking site is fine, but taking it to the limit that it starts to hinder the personal rights of the users, might not be acceptable. As a sweet end to the story, Facebook has accepted its fault in banning Kemp repeatedly and has informed the mother that it was a mistake by one of the team members and repeating the same mistake twice was just an accident.
