David Moyes, the Manchester United boss believes that his team does not have enough class to win the Champion’s league.
United were on the losing side in three of their opening six fixtures in the Barclays Premier League under Moyes. The latest defeat came against West Brom on Saturday. They lost 2-1 at home.
The defending champions were not successful in their pursuit of many prolific players including Cesc Fabregas and Leighton Baines and Ander Herra. All of it came to nothing. Moyes is unsure whether his side is capable of challenging other teams vying for Europe’s top prize.
“You need at least five or six world-class players to win the Champions League,” he told several leading tabloids.
“Look at Bayern Munich and Barcelona. They have more than 5 or 6 world-class players. They have had them in the past as well. Real Madrid easily have high quality players, this season. That is the level we need to be at. We definitely can’t match those teams player by player. But, we have immense experience in our squad and we should be looking at utilizing that,” he said.
Domestically, United’s start to the premier league season has been the worst since the 1989-1990 season. The defeat to West Brom was their first loss at home since 1978. At the end of the game, Moyes felt that his side got what they deserve.
“Disappointing performance and a disappointing result. We never really got up to speed,” Moyes said.
“We missed that spark and West Brom deserved it no question. I can’t argue with that.”
Moyes introduced Adnan Januzaj at half-time and substituted Shinji Kagawa. That change hardly had any effect in the game.
