Tottenham’s attacker, Defoe has been tempted to join the ambitious Major League Soccer side which is headed by his Spurs team-mate Ryan Nelsen.
It is believed that the 31-year-old striker will travel to Canada on Sunday ahead of a commercial engagement on Monday before returning to Tottenham on loan, possibly until the end of April.
Defoe is said to earn £90,000-a-week at Toronto, which also is believed to be one of the biggest deals in MLS history.
The Toronto’s official club did not provide any clue on its site about the deal but a teasing image on its homepage talked up an imminent “big deal”.
Spurs who hoped for delaying the announcement until this weekend game against Crystal Palace, was apparently broken by the local press.
Defoe, who has an outstanding record with the English club by scoring 142 goals, ranked him in the fifth place among the clubs all time leading scorers.
Reports from Canada stated that the Toronto club will pay Spurs around £6million for Defoe, whose current deal
had 18 months left to run.
Toronto has also keen in moving the USA midfield star Michael Bradley from Italian side Roma.
The total cost of both deals would be in excess of $100million and would represent two of the biggest transfers ever seen in MLS.
