Customers Alleging That LinkedIn Hacked Their E-Mail Addresses

LinkedIn, one of the most popular professional social networking website, has been sued by customers who allege that it hacked their email accounts and downloaded contacts illegally for advertising purpose. A federal judge in San Jose, California ordered company, to stop LinkedIn from repeating any such practice and also to return the revenue made from by using their identities in order to promote its own website to non-members.

A Spokesman from the company declares that this lawsuit is without merit and they will fight vigorously against it. “LinkedIn’s own website contains hundreds of complaints regarding this practice,” they said in the complaint filed September 17, which also seeks unspecified damages.

One of the allegation was from Deborah Lagutaris, who is professionally a tax preparer, real estate broker and former law clerk. She described that LinkedIn contacted more than 3,000 people in her name.

These allegations also effected Stock Exchange of LinkedIn, as it fell by 2.1 percent yesterday in New York and closed at $243.90.
