Jan Tomaszewski, the Poland Legend has admitted that Southampton goalkeeper, Artur Boruc would not be able to stop England from reaching the World Cup.
Poland held England to a draw 40 years ago, inspired by Tomaszewski’s excellent goalkeeping. The situation was almost the same. The host needed a victory to reach the finals.
“Artur is probably one of the best goalkeepers in the world, but would he be able to stop England on his own? I don’t think so. I, myself have made mistakes in my prime days, but my team-mates saved the team. Our defensive lineup isn’t very strong now. Artur must rely on himself”, said Tomaszewski.
On his first visit to the England Stadium, Wembley, Tomaszewski was infamously called a “clown” before kick-off. However, he made a series of fascinating saves as Poland clinched a 1-1 draw that saw them qualify.
This year, Poland is no longer in contention to make the finals. However, with high quality players in Borussia Dortmund like Robert Lewandowski and captain Jakub Blaszczykowski, they indeed pose a question as England would like to seize victory that would guarantee them a place in Brazil coming summer.
Tomaszewski is now 65 years old. He is a politician in Poland. He would be there at Tuesday’s game and he said,
“I wish there was more importance to this game for Poland. Indeed, it was a big game for both of us. Now, we hardly have any hope of qualifying even if we end up with a resounding victory. We will still perform well at Wembley because we are building a team for Euro 2016. A good performance would really inspire us.
There is absolutely no pressure on us. England would be under immense pressure if they don’t win. Their supporters and fans won’t forgive them so easily”, added Tomaszewski, who will be among the thousands of Polish fans at the Wembley stadium on Tuesday.
Boruc has been in very good form for the Saints this season. He has kept five clean sheets in seven Premier League games.
